I know I’ve said dozens of times I love classic rock—and I do, no doubt—but lately I’m on this very jangley ’70s rock kick. I thought I was trying to listen to old school punk, but then took a hard left into Brit-pop and the like. I’ve had Badfinger, the Pretenders, the Kinks, Nick Lowe, Rockpile, and early Bowie on a loop along with Matthew Sweet, Neil Young, The Cars, early R.E.M., and the Knack (yeah I know the Knack is more ’80s New-Wave, but there’s still definite musical throughline with the other bands). I was definitely in a funk the last few weeks and the music I was listening to didn’t help at all; great music, but not ones to lift spirits. Here the lyrics can be very heavy but the music is bright and jumpy. And that doesn’t even count some of the ska I’ve sprinkled in there (English Beat). Guess I kind of needed that lately, but I’m getting whiplash from the change in direction.
